Multiple computer systems run by Ireland's health authority were knocked out of action for several hours on Thursday, preventing employees from using email or browsing the web. The root cause was traced to a ransomware incident that struck an outside firm holding HSE records.

An official representative for the health service characterised the disruption as a "technical issue" that hindered internet traffic, leading to restricted or zero access to various nationwide IT and phone platforms. The representative insisted this was a networking failure rather than a security breach.

Yet insiders informed The Journal that the HSE was an indirect casualty: the actual target was a separate organisation in its supply chain. Workers at a hospital in Dublin were alerted via email about broad login difficulties affecting one core system, with problems limited to fresh sign-in attempts.

Service has since returned to normal. The episode underscores persistent weaknesses in the digital supply chains supporting vital public infrastructure, where a strike against a single vendor can ripple outward and impair essential operations.

The health service has endured significant cyber incidents before, including the high-profile 2021 Conti ransomware assault that caused widespread paralysis of medical services across the country.
