Husband, 72, remanded over wife's murder in Portlaoise home
A pensioner has been sent to Cloverhill Prison after a judge refused to grant bail at a district court sitting in Portlaoise.
Eugen Constantin, aged 72, faces a single charge of murdering Adina Raluca Constantin, aged 50, at the couple's dwelling on Church Street in the Laois town on July 5.
During the brief hearing, a detective sergeant from the local Garda detective unit outlined that the accused, when formally put on notice of the allegation, acknowledged he understood what was being said. The court also heard that arrangements are in place for an interpreter to assist the defendant, who requires Romanian-language support.
His legal representative told the bench that, because of the severity of the accusation, any request for release on bail would be directed to the superior court rather than the district level.
Judge Andrew Cody ordered the accused to remain in custody and set a further hearing for July 17, which will take place through a video-link facility.
