Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after being stopped at a mandatory garda checkpoint in Dublin.

The incident occurred on 28 May when Byrne was travelling from a hotel in the city centre towards Dublin Airport. Gardaí conducted a breathalyser test at the roadside before taking him to Pearse Street Garda Station, where he was asked to provide a urine sample.

Byrne, who represents North Wexford and South Wicklow, informed his party of the arrest on the morning it took place. He subsequently stepped down from his position as chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence.

In a radio interview, the TD stated that drink-driving is "wrong, full stop" and described the past week as difficult. He added that he would "face the consequences of whatever happens" as the garda investigation continues.

A garda investigation into the matter is ongoing, with Byrne awaiting the results of the urine sample analysis.
