A man from Iran has been arrested after a fire was deliberately set at a mosque in central Dublin.

A male originally from Iran has been detained following a deliberate blaze at a place of worship in the heart of Dublin.

The suspect, aged 30, was taken into custody by gardaí on Tuesday. He is being questioned at a Dublin station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, which allows detention for up to 24 hours.

The arson attack took place at the mosque on Talbot Street in the city centre. CCTV footage captured dramatic images of flames engulfing the building's entrance.

Law enforcement sources indicated that the individual has a background of grievances and may have mental health difficulties. Investigators do not currently believe the incident was connected to any extremist ideology or terrorist organisation.

The man can be held for a maximum of one day before being either freed or formally charged.
