Killarney murder suspect held in Middle East as gardaí build prosecution file
The partner of an American-born woman found dead in her Kerry residence is being held in a Middle Eastern nation, with the possibility of being returned to Ireland if prosecutors decide to charge him.
Ahmad Al-Saqar, 28, is in custody in Jordan after being picked up by local security forces shortly after crossing into their territory. The detention was not requested by Irish police, sources confirmed to the Irish Examiner.
Jamey Carney, 43, was discovered lifeless at her property near Muckross Road in Killarney just before 1:30pm on July 7. Medical examination showed she had been asphyxiated and had suffered severe physical harm. She was found beneath bedding in her sleeping area.
The suspect had spent the previous evening at her address. In the early hours of the following morning, he took a coach to the capital, then caught a plane from Dublin Airport bound for Turkey. He exited the jurisdiction before the grim discovery was made.
Ireland has no formal prisoner-transfer arrangement with Jordan. However, an Interpol contact explained to the paper that nations can still agree to hand over fugitives in specific instances without a standing pact. The foreign legal system permits suspects in grave cases to remain in pre-trial detention for as long as a year and a half.
For Dublin to seek his return, formal accusations must first be laid in an Irish court. Detectives are still assembling material and are believed to be preparing documentation for the state's chief prosecutor.
Ms Carney, a native of Westchester in New York state, was laid to rest in Killarney on Wednesday. A midday service was held at St Mary's Cathedral, after which her remains were cremated privately. She leaves behind a daughter, mother, sister, and extended circle of family and companions.
