Suspended garda awaits verdict in rape and child cruelty trial
A 48-year-old officer currently barred from active duty is awaiting a jury decision at the Central Criminal Court, facing accusations of sexually assaulting his former partner and abusing two of his children.
The man contests one allegation of cruelty toward his younger child, now 17, spanning the years 2015 through 2024. He also denies two separate instances of forcing himself upon his ex-spouse, said to have happened in 2009 and again in 2021.
Further charges include mistreatment of his older child, presently 24, on unknown occasions between 2007 and 2020. An additional claim of physical attack causing injury to this same offspring, allegedly carried out between late 2021 and early 2022 after she had become an adult, is also being disputed.
Everyone named in the case is shielded from public identification by legal statute. The purported wrongdoing occurred at two different homes in Ireland's northwest region where the household resided at those times.
The accused holds no earlier criminal history. Following two days of evidence review, the panel was directed by Judge Sean Gillane to halt discussions for the night. They are expected to reconvene Thursday to continue their assessment.
