Jury unable to reach verdict on teen accused of murdering Cork postman
A jury at the Central Criminal Court could not reach a verdict after deliberating for almost 19 hours in the trial of a 17-year-old who denied murdering Cork postman Barry Daly (44), the Irish Independent reports.
The youth stood accused of killing the father-of-two in an incident that shocked the local community. Mr Daly, who worked as a postal delivery worker, died following an assault.
During the proceedings, the prosecution outlined evidence linking the teenager to the fatal attack. The defence contested the allegations and argued that the accused was not responsible for the killing.
The panel of jurors spent close to 19 hours considering the evidence before informing the presiding judge that they were unable to agree on a verdict. The judge subsequently discharged the jury.
The case arose from an investigation by gardaí following Mr Daly's death. The Director of Public Prosecutions will now determine whether to pursue a retrial of the youth on the murder charge.
