A 35-year-old awaiting trial for a fatal knife attack on a woman near Clifden has been found dead in Castlerea Prison.

Staff discovered Ali Sohrabi in his cell on the morning of 25 June. Investigators do not currently believe anyone else was involved in the death.

Sohrabi had been kept in custody after being accused over the killing of Masumeh Manojan, who was also known in the area as Ati Jafari. Her remains were found at the end of May near an asylum-seeker housing complex on the edge of the Connemara town. She had suffered severe cuts and puncture wounds.

Police say a medical examination of Sohrabi’s body will decide how their inquiry proceeds.

He had been detained as part of the murder probe and was formally accused after being treated for wounds of his own and questioned by detectives.
