A homeless man has been remanded to prison after being charged with the killing of a female victim found dead close to a State-run housing facility in west Galway.

Ali Sohrabi (35) was brought before an out-of-hours sitting of Galway District Court on Saturday evening. He faces a single charge of murdering Masoumeh Jafri Manojan — also known in the area as Ati Jafari — at a Clifden location between Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. The deceased was aged in her thirties.

A detective from Oranmore gave sworn testimony that he placed the accused under arrest and formally charged him at regional headquarters shortly after 8pm on Saturday. When the allegation was put to him, Sohrabi responded with the word "no".

The hearing, which started at half past nine and concluded within minutes, was facilitated by an interpreter fluent in Persian. The accused said nothing during the proceedings. His legal representative did not apply for release on bail; such applications for homicide must be made at the higher court level.

The presiding judge directed that the prisoner be sent to Castlerea and ordered that he be provided with both physical and mental health support while incarcerated. He is due to appear again remotely within days. A senior officer from the local division attended the session.

The woman's remains, bearing severe cutting injuries, were located near the perimeter of an international protection service site on the morning of Thursday 28 May.
