A man from south Tipperary faces seven charges after gardaí allegedly found a pistol, ammunition, narcotics and cash during a roadside stop in County Wexford.

A motorist from south Tipperary has been locked up following accusations that he possessed a weapon, controlled substances and a large quantity of money.

Gavin Lyons (33), residing near Carrick-on-Suir, came before magistrates in Gorey facing seven counts. The alleged offences took place during the small hours of Tuesday 9 June at Scarawalsh, outside Enniscorthy.

Charges include having a .32 calibre handgun, four bullets, around €40,000 worth of illicit substances, upwards of €8,000 in cash, behaviour that put people at risk, and dangerous vehicle operation, according to RTE.ie.

Garda Kevin Kehoe outlined to the bench that patrol members signalled for the accused to halt, but he ignored them and accelerated toward Enniscorthy in an uncontrolled fashion.

The driver later left his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Officers apprehended him at the scene.

He was transported to Wexford Garda Station for questioning. After interrogation, he was formally charged. He remained silent when each charge was read.

Defence solicitor Ms Lana Doherty stated no bail application would be made. She sought state-funded legal assistance, which Judge Cheatle granted.

The magistrate directed that Lyons stay in detention until his next court date on 17 June, when he will appear by video link from Gorey.
