A male suspect in his forties is in custody after police uncovered an extensive cannabis production facility in the Ballymakeera area of County Cork.

The raid was carried out on Monday by detectives from two regional narcotics units working together. The operation fell under Operation Tara, the nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking that began in mid-2021.

At the property, officers found what they characterised as an advanced cultivation setup. They removed 122 fully grown cannabis plants, which analysts estimate could fetch around €97,000 on the street. In addition, investigators found close to one kilogram of processed cannabis worth roughly €20,000. Various items used in the production and packaging of drugs were also collected as evidence.

The detainee is being questioned under legislation that permits up to seven days of detention without charge. The confiscated material is scheduled for testing at Ireland's forensic laboratory.

Authorities stated that the probe remains active and did not exclude the possibility of additional detentions.

Operation Tara targets criminal groups involved in importing, manufacturing, distributing, and selling illegal substances across all levels of the supply chain.
