A man in his 60s was hospitalised with serious injuries after an assault in Portarlington, Co Laois, in the early hours of Sunday. A man in his 40s has been arrested.

A man in his 60s was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin with serious injuries following an assault on Main Street, Portarlington, Co Laois, at around 1.15am on Sunday, independent.ie reports.

Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s in connection with the incident, who was being held in custody under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

Investigators have appealed for witnesses, as well as anyone with camera footage from the area recorded between 12.45am and 1.30am, to come forward.
