A man has been handed a prison sentence of five and a half years for sexually assaulting a woman at an IPAS facility in County Westmeath during June 2025.

A man who attacked a woman at an International Protection Accommodation Service centre in County Westmeath has been sentenced to five years and six months behind bars. The incident occurred on 15 June 2025.

The defendant, whose identity is protected by court order, pleaded guilty to a single count of rape at the Central Criminal Court on the scheduled trial date. He had no criminal record in any jurisdiction.

BreakingNews.ie reports that the pair were both staying at the same IPAS site. The man messaged the woman on the evening in question, telling her he had clothing for her from Dublin. She entered his room, where no roommates were present. He then forced her down and carried out the sexual assault against her will.

Following the attack, the perpetrator repeatedly contacted the victim by phone and text to apologise. She recorded three of these calls and shared them with his roommates. The next morning, she informed the centre manager, who contacted gardaí. She underwent examination at a Sexual Assault Treatment Unit.

In two separate interviews with detectives, the man insisted the pair were romantically involved and that the encounter was consensual. Detective Garda Olivia Kelly testified that he had earlier professed love for the woman and was obsessed with her.

The victim's impact statement, read aloud in court, described her ongoing struggle: "Since the day this incident happened, I am trying to be strong. I want to be the person I was." She stated she has lost trust in everyone and experiences suicidal thoughts when reflecting on the event. "He has caused me so much pain. I will never forget it for the rest of my life," she said.

Presiding Judge Paul McDermott classified the crime as among the "most serious kind." He observed that the victim had consistently signalled her desire for friendship only, yet the accused disregarded this entirely. She had been lured to his room under dishonest pretences. The judge dismissed any claim of misunderstanding, stating there was "no scope for ambiguity."

A headline term of seven years was established. This was reduced after weighing mitigating circumstances: the eventual guilty plea, absence of prior convictions, an apology letter suggesting remorse, and the hardship of imprisonment far from his family in Nigeria. The custodial term was backdated to when he entered custody in June 2025. A prohibition on contacting the victim was also ordered.

Upon completing his sentence, the man faces deportation.
