A man in his seventies has received a six-year prison term for indecently assaulting a young girl repeatedly during the 1970s.

A man now aged 76 has been ordered to spend six years behind bars for molesting a youngster on numerous occasions half a century earlier, BreakingNews.ie reported.

Tom White, from Brookhaven in Montpelier, Co Limerick, was convicted by jurors on ten separate counts. The offending took place between the summer of 1971 and the summer of 1976, when the complainant was between 13 and 16 years of age. White himself was in his twenties at that stage.

He gained entry to the child's dwelling through his mother's employment with her household. Over a five-year span, he exploited this position to inappropriately touch the minor at both her residence and his own, while also subjecting her to crude verbal comments and physical mistreatment.

The initial attack happened when the girl was dispatched to White's property to monitor a meal. There, he grabbed her from behind, fondled her, and simulated sexual acts while she remained fully clothed. She was left shocked and fearful. The pattern repeated several times each week until she departed her family home at 16.

Her siblings testified during proceedings in Limerick that they had observed White's behaviour.

In a statement read to the court, the survivor described how the "horror" she endured coloured every element of her existence for the next five decades. Once a cheerful, innocent child, she said her childhood ended when the perpetrator violated her home, body and mind. She encouraged others who had suffered similar harm to find their voice and speak up.

Judge Eileen Creedon commended the woman for her bravery and composure throughout the process. She characterised White's conduct as a sustained breach of trust against someone who ought to have felt secure in her own home.

A starting point of ten years was set before being lowered to six, accounting for the defendant's elderly status, heart complaints, clean record, and the 50-year gap since the crimes. During that time, White had wed, fathered three offspring, and maintained steady employment without further brushes with the law.

The complainant sought publication of White's identity while retaining her own confidentiality.
