A judge has signed an order for the immediate detention of a 30-year-old accused who skipped a scheduled hearing at Monaghan District Court.

Saulius Vertelis, residing at Riverside, Coolshannagh, Monaghan Town, had been ordered to appear but was not present. A garda sergeant requested the warrant, which the judge approved.

The defendant was first charged in July of last year after officers allegedly recovered 27,500 ecstasy pills worth over €235,000 on the street. Authorities also claim they found roughly 50 grams of cannabis herb, worth about €1,000, inside a vehicle.

He had been freed on bail from the High Court in September and had shown up for multiple prior hearings. At the March sitting, the court was told the Director of Public Prosecutions had not yet issued directions.

His legal representative said he had no explanation for the absence.

The accused, originally from another country, has lived in Ireland since 2016. He had previously been allowed to remain at liberty under continuing bail conditions.
