More than 40 individuals are set to appear in court after being arrested during a large-scale garda operation targeting organised retail crime in Dublin.

The charges follow Operation Táirge, a nationwide initiative launched in 2023 to tackle theft networks that resell stolen goods through black-market channels. Gardaí use intelligence-led methods to identify offenders, work with retailers to boost security, and target areas where stolen merchandise is traded.

Among those arrested, 15 are juveniles who have been referred to the Youth Diversion Programme. The remaining adult suspects face charges related to shoplifting offences.

Organised retail crime typically involves groups working together to hit multiple stores, then selling the stolen items back into the market. Refund fraud is another common tactic, where organisers recruit others to steal goods and then process fake returns.

Recent reports indicate criminal networks have been focusing on high-end retail centres in Dundrum, Blackrock and Dún Laoghaire. Meat has become a particularly popular target due to rising prices, creating serious problems for local businesses.

In early May, An Garda Síochána established a dedicated unit to address the surge. Officers identify suspects through profiling, cross-divisional cooperation, CCTV review and surveillance.

Gardaí said the investigation is continuing and a second phase of enforcement is expected to begin shortly.
