A 39-year-old father was gunned down in a south Dublin suburb on Sunday morning in what detectives suspect could be the state's first organised-crime firearms fatality in nearly two years. Mark Cullen, who lived in the Shankill area, sustained a wound to his upper thigh at Patrician Park, Kill Avenue, Dún Laoghaire, and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The fatal encounter took place around 8:30 am. Investigators think the victim travelled to the quiet residential street for a scheduled appointment. Officers are weighing two possibilities: that Cullen was intentionally targeted in a reprisal or discipline attack, or that the weapon discharged unintentionally during a physical altercation.

The deceased had a lengthy criminal record and was known to police through his connections to a low-level narcotics crew operating in south Dublin. His prior run-ins with the law included convictions for physical violence, public-order offences, blade possession, and minor theft. He had walked free from custody in May 2025 and was awaiting upcoming court dates on shoplifting and vehicle-damage charges. Most recently, a judge handed him an 18-month term, fully suspended, just weeks before his death.

Prior to the killing, authorities had no intelligence suggesting Cullen's life was at risk. A pathologist was expected to examine the body to clarify the bullet's path and establish the exact mechanism of death.

An incident room has been set up at the local garda station, and detectives are urging anyone who passed through Kill Avenue between 8:00 and 9:00 am — especially motorists with dashboard cameras — to share what they saw.
