Detectives in Downpatrick have begun a homicide probe after a male was found dead inside a house in the Marian Park area. A suspect in his 30s is in custody.

A homicide probe has been started by police in Downpatrick after a male was found dead inside a house in the Marian Park area of the Co Down town.

Officers from the PSNI attended the address around midday on Sunday, 10 August, following a report of a deceased person. A male aged in his 30s was taken into custody on suspicion of killing and is being questioned while assisting detectives.

The Major Investigation Team is handling the case. District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett said the probe is at an early stage and that the death may be linked to a separate serious assault that occurred in the St Patrick's Avenue area on the same day.

The ambulance service confirmed it received a call to the Marian Park location around noon.

Local politicians voiced alarm over the incident. Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazzard called the events "deeply shocking" and said residents had been saddened and horrified. SDLP Councillor Conor Galbraith attended the scene and asked the public to allow officers time and space to conduct their enquiries.

Authorities have asked anyone who may have useful information to contact the police.
