Gardaí have charged a man aged in his 30s with the killing of an 81-year-old woman discovered at her Waterford dwelling last Monday.

The victim, Noreen Daly, previously led the College of Art and Design in Dún Laoghaire. She had been living by herself in Ardsallagh since her spouse Michael died in 2023, having shifted from Monkstown in County Dublin at the start of this year. The pair had owned a vacation property in the Waterford area for a quarter-century.

Originally from Ballygarvan in County Cork, Daly relocated to Grenagh during childhood when her relatives sold farmland to allow construction of Cork Airport. She went on to become among the earliest flight attendants with the national carrier and later rose to head an art and design institution.

Mourners gathered at St Lachteen’s Church in Grenagh for her funeral liturgy, where relatives recalled her as someone who made others feel noticed and valued. Gifts brought to the altar included a small guitar-like instrument, a tropical plant, her personal headwear, a commemorative sculpture she had crafted for her late husband, and one of her own artworks. Interment followed at the adjoining cemetery.

Her relatives expressed appreciation to police and first responders for their work over the preceding days.
