Officers in County Antrim have opened a homicide inquiry following the discovery of three related individuals inside a dwelling in Ballymena.

The remains of one man and two women were located at an address along Old Cullybackey Road shortly after 9am on Monday. Superintendent William Calderwood, who leads the Mid and East Antrim District, confirmed the trio were related.

By the following morning, cordons were still in place at the property. Items belonging to youngsters, including playthings and small footwear, could be seen around the exterior of the building.

Calderwood indicated that forensic pathologists have yet to confirm how the victims died. Autopsies are expected to be carried out shortly. He asked members of the public not to spread unverified theories while enquiries continue.

Law enforcement stressed that residents need not fear for their safety. Detectives are not pursuing additional suspects at this stage.
