A 46-year-old resident of Cherrygrove, Portlaoise, appeared before the local district court last week facing multiple counts related to controlled substances.

James Carroll was before Judge Catherine Ryan at Portlaoise District Court. A garda sergeant informed the judge that prosecutors have indicated the matter can remain at district level on condition the defendant admits guilt.

The accusations stem from a search conducted at the man's home on 10 April of the previous year. Officers allegedly discovered various substances — including cocaine, cannabis and Alprazolam — stored in a container behind the building. The total estimated value of the seized items was put at €3,500. Authorities believe the substances were intended both for personal consumption and distribution.

The presiding judge agreed to hear the case at district level.

Carroll's legal representative noted that he is presently serving a sentence for separate matters and is scheduled to remain in prison until the summer of 2030. The judge released him on bail, with the case adjourned until mid-September to give him opportunity to decide how to respond to the accusations.
