A prisoner initially facing murder allegations over a fatal gun attack in north Dublin has pleaded guilty to involvement with an organised crime group.

A 42-year-old inmate who was set to stand trial for murder has instead admitted to a reduced count connected to gang operations.

Paul Clarke, from the Coolock area of the capital, appeared at the country's highest criminal court this week. He accepted that between 23 and 24 November 2019, he knowingly assisted a structured criminal group in carrying out a homicide on a residential street in Dublin.

The victim, Eoin Boylan, sustained multiple gunshot wounds outside his family property on the evening of 24 November 2019. Medical staff at a nearby hospital were unable to save him.

Clarke had initially been accused of the killing itself when he was first brought before a lower court earlier this year. His legal representative told the presiding judge that Clarke is already midway through a substantial custodial sentence elsewhere but has been demonstrating good behaviour. The barrister asked for a pre-sentencing assessment to be prepared.

The judge scheduled the matter for early October and instructed probation services to compile a report before that hearing.
