Irish law enforcement intercepted a vehicle transporting explosives near the frontier with Northern Ireland. Authorities indicated the automobile was inspected during an investigation targeting dissident republicans, according to Jauns.lv.

A young woman driving the car was taken into custody and continues to be held in pre-trial detention. Subsequently, officers also arrested a man, who likewise remains in custody. Both individuals were detained on suspicion of committing crimes against the state.

The intended destination of the vehicle containing the explosive remains unknown at this time. To ensure safety, specialists from the Irish Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit were summoned to examine the automobile.

This incident marks at least the third explosives-related event in Northern Ireland this year linked to dissident republican activity. In April, a bomb detonated outside a police station on the outskirts of Belfast, causing no injuries. In another case, officers thwarted an attack on a police facility by destroying a device in a controlled explosion.

These episodes evoke memories of the sectarian conflict that plagued Northern Ireland from the late 1960s until the signing of the Good Friday Agreement on 10 April 1998. That decades-long violence claimed nearly 3,600 lives.

Ireland's police commissioner Justin Kelly commented on the persistent danger posed by radical factions. He noted that a small minority of dissident republicans reject the Good Friday accord and refuse to surrender arms and explosives. Kelly described this group as radical republicans and affirmed that security services must continue confronting this threat for the foreseeable future.
