Irish Police Seize Car Carrying Explosives Near Northern Ireland Border
Irish police intercepted a vehicle carrying explosives near the Northern Ireland border during an investigation into dissident republicans, liepajniekiem.lv reported.
A young woman who was driving the car was arrested and remains in pre-trial custody. Officers later detained a man, who also remains held. Both were taken into custody on suspicion of crimes against the state.
Where the woman planned to take the car bomb is not yet known. The Irish Army’s bomb disposal unit was called in to inspect the vehicle.
The incident adds to a series of violent acts attributed to dissident republicans in Northern Ireland this year. In April, a bomb exploded near a police station on the outskirts of Belfast; no one was injured. In another case, police foiled an attempt to attack a police station and carried out a controlled detonation of the device.
These events recall the intercommunal conflict that lasted from the late 1960s until the Good Friday Agreement was signed on 10 April 1998, a period in which almost 3,600 people were killed.
The head of the Irish police stated that a small minority of radical republicans continues to reject the Good Friday Agreement and has not surrendered arms or explosives. He described this as a threat that will have to be faced for some time to come.
