Irish police discovered a hidden explosive device inside a vehicle during a security operation close to the Northern Ireland frontier on Wednesday, authorities confirmed on Friday. Officers carried out the search as part of an ongoing probe targeting dissident republican activity.

A young woman who had been driving the car was taken into custody and remains held in pre-trial detention. Investigators later arrested a male suspect, who is also still in custody. Law enforcement officials suspect both individuals of committing offenses against the state. The intended destination of the vehicle and the device has not been disclosed.

Military specialists from the Irish army’s bomb-disposal team were summoned to inspect and neutralize the threat. The incident marks the third vehicle-borne explosive case linked to paramilitaries in the region this year.

In April, a bomb detonated outside a police facility on the edge of Belfast, causing no injuries. Authorities thwarted a separate attack on another station and destroyed the device in a controlled blast. These events evoke memories of the sectarian conflict that gripped Northern Ireland from the late 1960s until the 1998 Good Friday accord, a period in which nearly 3,600 people lost their lives.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly warned that a tiny fringe of radical republicans continues to reject the peace settlement and retains weapons and explosives. He described the group as small but dangerous, adding that security services expect to confront this menace for the foreseeable future.
