A Dublin man facing transfer to Northern Ireland on a murder charge connected to the death of criminal figure Robbie Lawlor has been kept in custody after a judge rejected his bail request.

A judge has ordered that Jonathan Gill remain in custody while awaiting a ruling on whether he will be sent to Northern Ireland to stand trial for the murder of Robbie Lawlor.

Mr Justice Patrick McGrath turned down the 44-year-old's request for release on Monday, accepting law enforcement concerns that Gill might skip future hearings. Gardaí had objected to the bail bid.

The decision follows earlier revelations that Gill owes more than €860,000 in unpaid taxes, a debt levied by Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau. Prosecutors used this financial liability as part of their case to keep him behind bars during the extradition proceedings.

Gill is accused of involvement in the fatal shooting of Lawlor, who had built a reputation in underworld circles before his death.
