Carlow court jails serial offender over €85 steak theft at Aldi

Google News IE — Crime (en) reports that a man who concealed almost €85 worth of steaks under his jumper and walked out of a Bagenalstown supermarket without paying has been sentenced to six months in prison at Carlow District Court.

Constantin Ghetu (35), of 18 Portersfield, Clonsilla, Dublin 15, pleaded guilty to the theft at Aldi in Bagenalstown, which took place on 20 September 2025. CCTV footage captured him at 10.53am placing a number of steaks inside his jumper before leaving the store. The meat was valued at €84.95.

Ghetu has 81 previous convictions, 79 of which relate to theft offences. His most recent prior conviction came at Nenagh Circuit Court on 26 February, where he received a six-month custodial sentence for fraud.

The court heard that Ghetu, who is originally from Romania, has lived in Ireland for four years and is currently serving a four-year prison sentence. He asked to enter a guilty plea to the theft charge before the court.

Judge Geraldine Carthy took the guilty plea into account before convicting Ghetu and imposing a six-month prison sentence.
