A 52-year-old man accused of attempting to kill three children outside a Dublin crèche has told gardaí a benefits dispute left him distraught, though he denied any wish to cause injury.

Riad Bouchaker was questioned at Mountjoy station on 20 December 2023, roughly four weeks after the events at Parnell Square East. Detectives showed him video recordings from the area. He described feeling distressed after receiving an unfavourable decision from welfare officials. He insisted he had no prior history of such conduct.

During the interview, Bouchaker remarked that his mental state felt shattered. "My mind feels like there is no brain in my head," he told Garda Conor Mackey. He expressed relief upon learning one child had survived and indicated he would accept whatever consequences the family sought.

The defendant, who has no fixed abode, faces multiple serious counts: attempting to murder two girls and a boy, seriously assaulting childcare assistant Leanne Flynn, attacking two other minors and a teenager, and brandishing a blade in a threatening way. All pleas entered are not guilty.

Earlier testimony revealed one girl suffered critical brain injury after a blade pierced her heart, causing massive blood loss. The proceedings before Justice Tony Hunt involve a panel of twelve jurors and remain ongoing.
