Officers in County Louth stopped a stolen hearse in Dunleer during the early morning and arrested two minors connected to the incident.

A pair of minors found themselves in custody after Gardaí intercepted a stolen funeral car in the early hours of the morning.

The vehicle had been removed from Tenanty's Funeral Home, located in Ardee, County Louth. Law enforcement officers spotted it being driven recklessly and pulled it over in Dunleer, roughly a short distance from where it had been taken. The stop occurred at about a quarter to three in the morning.

Authorities confirmed that no coffin or remains were inside the car at the time of the incident.

Both individuals were taken into custody at the roadside and transported to a nearby police station in the county. They were questioned under provisions of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

After being interviewed, the pair were let go without any charges being filed against them. Their file has since been passed to the national programme that handles young offenders outside the court system.

A member of the force, speaking to the Irish Independent, did not mince words about the suspects' judgement, calling them a "pair of eejits" and questioning the logic of taking such an unmistakable automobile and believing it could be driven around unnoticed.

The episode occurred during a wider road safety crackdown over the June Bank Holiday period. That operation saw over four thousand drivers pulled over for exceeding speed limits, while many others were arrested for operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
