A community gathering will take place next week in memory of a woman found deceased at her County Laois dwelling at the start of July.

Gardaí and emergency crews reached the Church Street address in Portlaoise around half past noon on 5 July, BreakingNews.ie reports. The State Pathologist was alerted and an autopsy followed.

The dead woman's spouse, aged 72, stood before Portlaoise District Court the following Tuesday accused of ending her life inside their shared home. Judges ordered him detained at Cloverhill Prison, with a further hearing set for 17 July via video connection.

The victim, 55, held Romanian citizenship. Residents have arranged a remembrance event for 17 July at 6pm in the town's Memorial Garden on Ridge Road. Her sibling, Dana Baciu, will attend and address those present, with an interpreter helping.

Niamh Ní Riain, helping coordinate the gathering, explained to a local radio station that townspeople swiftly united to plan the occasion. She emphasised the aim of showing the grieving relatives that neighbours stand with them.

The woman had been employed at a dental prosthetics workshop located on the very road where she dwelt. Those living nearby recalled her as reserved yet consistently cheerful.

Separately, a family member named Ioan Olimpiu has started an online fundraiser to finance transporting the remains back to Romania. The appeal states that relatives are struggling to gather sufficient money for burial services abroad, and asks for public contributions or shares of the page.
