Community gathers in Blanchardstown to mourn Alex Coughlan following fatal assault

A vigil was held for Alex Coughlan, who died after an assault on Mill Road in Blanchardstown on 17 May. A GoFundMe for his family has raised over €20,000.

Vigil held for man who died following Blanchardstown assault

Residents and friends gathered to hold a vigil for Alex Coughlan, who died in hospital on Wednesday following an assault in Blanchardstown, Dublin, TheJournal.ie reports.

Mr Coughlan was found unconscious on Mill Road shortly after 4.20pm on Sunday, 17 May. He was pronounced dead in hospital three days later.

Those who knew him remembered him in strong terms. One local resident told RTÉ she "cannot believe what has happened here on this street." Another said: "We're all in shock … it's just hard to fathom."

Mr Coughlan has been described as a "wholesome" person who had "the loveliest presence."

Two boys in their mid-teens have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Both have since appeared in court.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched to help the family cover funeral costs, the details of which have not yet been announced. The fundraiser has surpassed €20,000.

The organiser of the campaign described Mr Coughlan as a "caring and selfless" man who brought "love and laughter" to many. "Alex was truly loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, warmth and presence touched so many lives, and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him," she wrote.

She also confirmed that Mr Coughlan's organs have been donated, calling it "a lasting gift that reflects the caring and selfless person he was."

Gardaí are continuing their investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. In particular, they wish to speak with anyone who was on Mill Lane in Blanchardstown, on foot or by car, between 4pm and 5pm on Sunday, 17 May.

Gardaí also confirmed they are aware of video footage of the incident circulating online and have asked the public not to share it, out of respect for Mr Coughlan and his family.
