Pub dynasty heirs sentenced over violent hotel foyer attack in Adare
Two offspring of celebrated Dublin landlord Charlie Chawke are behind bars after confessing to a vicious beating inflicted on two male guests inside a hotel lobby.
Bill and Alison Chawke set upon Gerard Cox and John McHugh at the Dunraven Arms in Adare during November 2023. The siblings pleaded guilty to the onslaught, which unfolded in the building's entrance hall.
Court testimony revealed Bill rushed at one victim and grappled with him on the ground, while Alison hurled a pint glass, sank her teeth into John McHugh's cheek, and struck his skull with her foot. Both men's eyes were also targeted during the melee.
Defence counsel argued the pair had been provoked by smirks and stares. Judge Fiona O'Sullivan dismissed that explanation, labelling the incident entirely unprovoked and noting its savage character. Legal representatives for the accused conceded the episode had shamed the family.
Bill Chawke was ordered to serve thirty months. Combined, the brother and sister received a total of two-and-a-half years of custody.
The Chawke surname has dominated Ireland's licensed trade for over half a century, with holdings spanning multiple venues and companies reporting combined net assets exceeding €22 million.
