The violence erupted shortly after half past noon at the dwelling in County Laois. Medics who arrived could not save her; she was declared deceased on site. Officials have alerted the State Pathologist, who will conduct an autopsy.
A male suspect, approximately 70 years old, was apprehended at the location. He remains in custody at an Eastern Region police facility, detained under Section 4 of the 1984 Criminal Justice Act. Forensic teams have cordoned off the dwelling for technical analysis. A lead detective has taken charge, with an operations centre now running out of Portlaoise station.
Detectives want to hear from anyone near Church Street between 11am and 1pm that day, especially motorists or residents whose cameras may have captured relevant footage.
Elsewhere in the capital, a young man in his 20s was left fighting for survival following violence on Hawkins Street, Dublin 2, at roughly twenty minutes past midnight on Sunday. Paramedics rushed him to Beaumont Hospital, where doctors describe his state as extremely serious.
Officers are keen to speak with anyone in the Hawkins Street vicinity between midnight and half past, and urge those with dashcam or security recordings to come forward.
