Third arrest made in Kyran Durnin murder investigation

A woman in her 50s has been arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of six-year-old Kyran Durnin, RTÉ News reports. She is the third person detained in the case.

Third person arrested over Kyran Durnin case

A woman in her 50s was arrested on Sunday morning as part of the ongoing investigation into the disappearance and murder of six-year-old Kyran Durnin, RTÉ News reports. She is being held at a garda station in the eastern region.

Gardaí had spoken to the woman on several previous occasions. She was known to Kyran. A search under warrant is also being carried out at a residential property in Drogheda, Co Louth.

She is the third person to be arrested in connection with the case.

Kyran was first reported missing to gardaí in Drogheda in August 2024. At the time, gardaí were initially told he had not been seen for a few days. It later emerged that he had in fact been missing for almost two years by that point. His school had been notified in the summer of 2022 that he would not return for the following term.

A murder investigation was launched and a house in Drogheda was searched. In December 2024, a woman who had been living in the UK was arrested in connection with the case and later released without charge.

A 36-year-old man, Anthony Maguire, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of Kyran's murder. Gardaí also searched his home at Beechwood Drive in Drogheda. Maguire was suspected of having provided false information to Tusla in relation to Kyran's disappearance. He was released without charge and was found dead at his home six days later, in circumstances gardaí are treating as "a personal tragedy".

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan called on anyone with information to contact An Garda Síochána. "Obviously there are people out there who have information in respect of this crime, and that information should be brought to the attention of An Garda Síochána," he said. He added that justice can only be served if sufficient information is passed on to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí say the investigation is ongoing.
