Joshua Vaz, 21, charged with murder of Negril restaurant owner Nashon McGibbon

A 21-year-old Westmoreland man has been charged with murder over the May 22 shooting death of Negril restaurant owner Nashon McGibbon. A European visitor was also wounded in the attack.

Joshua Vaz, 21, of Negril, Westmoreland, has been charged with murder in connection with the May 22 killing of restaurant owner Nashon McGibbon, also known as "Bubba" or "Bubbanash", jamaicaobserver.com reports.

According to the Savanna-la-Mar Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), McGibbon, 36, was at his place of business at approximately 8:40 pm when he was allegedly attacked by Vaz and a second accomplice. The men opened fire, striking McGibbon multiple times.

McGibbon reportedly attempted to flee but was pursued by the assailants, who continued shooting. Following the attack, the men robbed him of a bag containing a laptop and an undetermined sum of money.

A European visitor present at the restaurant was shot in the left shoulder during the incident.

Alongside the murder charge, Vaz faces additional charges of wounding with intent, robbery with aggravation, and using a firearm to commit a felony.

Vaz was arrested on Tuesday, May 26, during a police operation in Whitehall in the parish. He was formally charged on Friday, June 5, after being positively identified. His court date is currently being finalised.
