Officers in Jamaica say criminals have tried to push drugs through parcel services more than 350 times in the past two years, and seizures are now a weekly occurrence.

Law enforcement in Jamaica is grappling with a sharp rise in traffickers using commercial delivery networks to move illegal substances abroad, with well over three hundred attempts detected since early 2024.

Patrae Rowe, the senior officer commanding the Firearm and Narcotics Investigation Division, disclosed that his team is actively reviewing these cases. The frequency has become so great, he said, that his unit now intercepts suspicious packages almost once a week.

The latest incident occurred this past Tuesday at a FedEx depot in the capital. Acting on a tip, surveillance officers watched as two men dropped off a consignment bound for Canada. Inside, investigators found approximately one kilogram of cocaine with an estimated worth of six hundred thousand Jamaican dollars. The pair had reportedly used bogus names on the shipping paperwork. They remain in custody and are expected to be formally charged in the coming days.

Rowe described the misuse of courier infrastructure as an ongoing headache and appealed to shipping firms for tighter coordination with detectives.

Since the beginning of the current year, the division has taken possession of illicit drugs valued at upwards of seventy-seven million dollars. It has also contributed to the recovery of more than one hundred firearms during the same period.
