A man from Jamaica will spend over five years in an American federal prison after admitting he ran a bogus lottery scheme that swindled a woman out of more than $181,000.

Thirty-six-year-old Dwayne Anderson was ordered to serve 63 months behind bars, pay back the full amount taken from his victim, and contribute a further $100 to a victims' assistance programme, American prosecutors announced.

The fraud stretched from 2010 through to late 2017. During that period, Anderson reached out to the woman through calls, texts, and emails, hiding behind made-up names. He led her to believe she had struck it rich in a sweepstakes and needed to send cash to cover administrative charges and taxes before collecting her winnings.

He kept the pressure on, instructing her where to send each payment and coming back with fresh demands. By the time the scheme unravelled, the victim had lost over $181,000.

American authorities secured an indictment in early 2023. Jamaican police arrested Anderson months later, and he was sent to the United States to stand trial. He entered a guilty plea to wire fraud in September 2025.

American officials stressed that scams of this kind do serious damage to elderly targets. One prosecutor noted that offenders who exploit vulnerable people overseas will still be pursued, and a postal inspector warned that investigators will cross borders to hold perpetrators responsible.
