Detectives from the St Catherine South Police Division are investigating a robbery at the Scotiabank branch in Portmore, after thieves broke into ATMs and made off with a large but as yet unconfirmed sum of cash, jamaica-gleaner.com reports.

The theft took place between 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 and 8:43 a.m. on Sunday, June 28. It was discovered by security personnel during routine checks, who found the door to the facility partially open.

An initial report was made to the bank's management and to the police, who then reviewed surveillance footage. That footage reportedly showed several individuals dressed in black arriving in a Nissan Latio sedan and entering the area used by security personnel to reach the ATMs.

The group is alleged to have used access codes to open four ATM safes before removing the cash and leaving the scene. Police noted there were no signs of forced entry, and that only authorised security personnel are permitted access to that area — a detail investigators say they have not yet fully accounted for.

The exact amount stolen remains undetermined, though police describe it as substantial. Each ATM at the branch is reportedly capable of holding up to $20 million.

The Portmore Criminal Investigation Branch is conducting an intensive investigation into the matter.
