A security operation in the Sherwood Forest area of Portland turned deadly early Wednesday when two individuals lost their lives during an encounter with law enforcement.

The Jamaica Observer reports that the incident unfolded shortly after 5:00 am when officers descended on a property occupied by a suspect released on bail for abduction and armed theft charges.

Investigators had received information that other persons of interest were also residing at the location, with possible links to a slaying that occurred in the first month of the year.

As the police team advanced into a portion of the building, they encountered two men carrying weapons. One of the men allegedly opened fire on the approaching officers, while his companion reportedly brandished a firearm in their direction.

The police unit responded with defensive gunfire. The wounded men were rushed to hospital, where doctors declared them deceased. Their names have not been disclosed by authorities.

Officers reportedly found two pistols at the scene: a silver and black Taurus G3 with a magazine holding three bullets, and a second silver and black Taurus with an obliterated serial number containing a single round.

All members of the police squad emerged from the incident without physical harm.
