Murder conviction: 24-year sentence handed down in Basseterre High Court

Two serious violent crime cases advance through St. Kitts courts

Thestkittsnevisobserver.com reports that the criminal justice system in St. Kitts and Nevis recorded two significant developments this week — one resulting in a murder sentence, the other in formal charges for attempted murder and firearms offences.

Akeem Whyte, of Taylor's Housing, was sentenced to 24 years in His Majesty's Prison for the murder of James Morton of Lower Monkey Hill, St. Peter's. Justice Patrick Thompson Jr. handed down the sentence on June 3, 2026, at the Basseterre High Court. Time already served on remand will be deducted from the total custodial term.

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force stated that the fatal incident took place on June 19, 2024, following a traffic-related altercation in Newtown the previous day that left Morton severely injured. Whyte entered a guilty plea on February 20, 2026.

In a separate matter, Mozhan Isles of Taylors Village has been formally charged in connection with an incident at Baker's Corner on May 28, 2026. The charges — laid at the Basseterre Police Station on May 30, 2026 — are: Attempted Murder, Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Ammunition, Discharging a Firearm in a Public Place, and Possession of a Firearm to Endanger Life.

The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force confirmed both cases following their respective investigations. Whyte's case has concluded with sentencing, while proceedings involving Isles are now before the court.
