A resident of the Cayman Islands who lost money to an online dating fraud has been reimbursed after Nigerian authorities tracked down the perpetrator and seized the stolen cash.

A Cayman Islands resident who was swindled in an internet dating scheme has received $23,000 after Nigerian law enforcement intercepted the funds and sent them back. The announcement came Friday from Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force.

The case began when the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service asked INTERPOL's Abuja office for assistance. They wanted help looking into a Nigerian citizen, Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, accused of bilking a Cayman resident through a fraudulent online romance.

Investigators in Abuja launched targeted, undercover inquiries that ended with Ikenna in custody and the entire $23,000 reclaimed. Once all paperwork was finished and international partners coordinated, the money was officially transferred to the Cayman police via Britain's High Commission in Abuja. Shaun McLeary, representing the commission, accepted the funds, which will now be passed safely to the person who was conned.

Hundeyin said the accused will face charges once the probe wraps up. He framed the outcome as proof of Nigeria's resolve to use smart policing tactics, work across borders, and break up global cyber-fraud rings.

The spokesperson added that his agency is determined to hunt down illicit gains, restore them to those who were wronged, and prosecute wrongdoers in keeping with both domestic statutes and international norms.
