Man Accused of Killing Estranged Wife in Castries

A 34-year-old resident of Belvedere, Canaries, is facing murder charges following the fatal shooting of his wife in Marigot, Castries, St. Lucia Times reports.

Primus Toussaint appeared before magistrates in Castries on May 25. The court ordered him held until June 30, when he is due back for another hearing.

His wife, 24-year-old Joy St Omer of Au Tabor, Anse La Raye, was discovered lifeless behind the wheel of a vehicle on the evening of May 18. Law enforcement from the Marigot station and the Major Crimes Unit reached the scene around 7:10 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. St Omer, who had a young child, could not be revived.

While officers were still at the location, word reached them that Toussaint had walked into the Criminal Investigations Department alongside an attorney. Officers there placed him under arrest on suspicion of homicide and transferred him to the Centralised Community Safety Centre.

Authorities had previously disclosed that a court-issued protection order barred Toussaint from contacting St Omer at the time she was killed.

The matter remains under judicial review as investigators continue their work.
