A 34-year-old man from Canaries has been charged with murdering his estranged spouse, who was found shot in her car in Marigot, Castries.

A man from the Canaries area has been formally accused of gunning down his former partner in Marigot last week, St. Lucia Times reports.

Thirty-four-year-old Primus Toussaint, who resides in Belvedere, was brought before a magistrate in Castries on May 25. The court ordered him held until his subsequent appearance at the end of June.

The deceased, 24-year-old Joy St Omer from Au Tabor in Anse La Raye, was a mother to one child. She was located inside an automobile on the evening of May 18, showing no signs of life. Law enforcement personnel from both the Marigot station and the Major Crimes Unit reached the area shortly after 7 p.m. following alerts about firearm discharge. Medical personnel at the site confirmed she had died.

While investigators were still examining the area, word reached them that Toussaint had gone to the Criminal Investigations Department on his own, together with an attorney. Officers placed him under arrest on suspicion of homicide and moved him to the Centralised Community Safety Centre.

Authorities noted that St Omer had already obtained a court order for protection against Toussaint prior to the deadly incident.
