A man from the west coast of Saint Lucia has been placed behind bars following his court appearance over the fatal shooting of his former partner, St. Lucia Times reports.

Thirty-four-year-old Primus Toussaint, who resides in Belvedere, Canaries, was brought before a magistrate in Castries on May 25. The court ordered him held until his next hearing, set for June 30.

Prosecutors allege Toussaint opened fire on Joy St Omer, a 24-year-old woman from Au Tabor, Anse La Raye, on the evening of May 18. The young mother was found lifeless inside a car in Marigot shortly after 7 p.m., when law enforcement personnel from both the local police station and the Major Crimes Unit rushed to the area upon hearing reports of gunshots. Medical personnel at the scene confirmed she had died.

Investigators say that while they were still examining the area, the suspect walked into the Criminal Investigations Department alongside his legal representative. He was then apprehended on a murder allegation and transported to the Centralised Community Safety Centre.

Court documents reveal that St Omer had already sought legal protection from Toussaint prior to her death, with a restraining order in place against him at the time of the attack.
