Killings in Saint Lucia have climbed steeply this year, according to figures released by the police on Thursday. Assistant Commissioner Luke Defrietas told reporters that 40 people have died violently so far, marking a 25% jump from the 32 recorded at this point in 2025.

Guns are by far the most common weapon. Defrietas said firearms were used in almost three out of every four slayings, or 73% of the total. Breaking down the causes of death: 29 victims were gunned down, nine were knifed, and two succumbed to injuries from blunt objects.

Men make up the overwhelming share of those killed. The assistant commissioner noted that 37 of the 40 deceased are male, which translates to 93% of all victims. Adults aged 21 to 35 are the hardest-hit demographic, highlighting that younger people face the greatest danger from violence.

The bloodshed has touched every policing region on the island. The Central Division has logged the largest tally, with the Southern and Northern Divisions trailing behind.
