Fatal violence has surged across Saint Lucia this year, with law enforcement reporting a 25% jump in killings compared to the same timeframe in 2025.
During a Thursday media briefing, Assistant Commissioner Luke Defreitas disclosed that authorities have logged 40 murder cases to date, rising from 32 recorded at this stage last year.
Shootings remain the predominant method of death, responsible for nearly three-quarters of all slayings. Among the 40 fatalities, 29 resulted from gunfire, while nine involved blades and two stemmed from severe beating injuries.
Men bear the overwhelming brunt of this bloodshed. Thirty-seven victims were male, comprising 93% of everyone killed.
Adults between 21 and 35 years old constitute the hardest-hit demographic, underscoring that youth remain particularly exposed to deadly assaults.
All three police zones have registered murders. The Central zone suffered the largest share, with the Southern and Northern zones following behind.
Defreitas noted some investigative success: detectives have cleared 17 of the 40 cases, achieving a 43% clearance rate, and every resolved matter has produced criminal charges.
