Gunman on the Run After Clash with Officers in Castries
A suspect carrying a weapon remains at large following a midday shootout with a police special unit in the capital.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday when members of the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearm Unit crossed paths with the individual at the junction of Chaussee Road and St Louis Street. According to high-ranking officials from the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, the officers were met with a barrage of bullets during the encounter.
In their official accounts, the law enforcement personnel stated that the assailant sought to end their lives, prompting authorities to open a probe into attempted homicide alongside a review of how the violent episode began.
Someone who saw the events unfold informed detectives that terrified members of the public rushed to shield themselves while shots flew between the fugitive and the uniformed personnel. The armed individual ultimately slipped away and has not been located since. Detectives are publicly appealing for the person to give themselves up.
During the operation, a bag thought to belong to the runaway was seized, and a gun was allegedly found within it. The inquiry is still active.
The episode has fueled renewed anxiety among residents regarding firearm-related violence and armed face-offs between offenders and the police across the island nation. Some locals have voiced demands for more forceful crime-fighting approaches, with one proposal suggesting that former officers could form a licensed group to help track down wanted criminals.
