Prison Cellphone Used by Assassination Convicts to Reach Go-Between, Court Told
A witness testifying in the jury proceedings against businessman Yorgen Fenech has claimed that two inmates convicted over a journalist's murder maintained contact with an alleged intermediary using a mobile device they had illicitly obtained while incarcerated.
Vince Muscat, who is serving a sentence for his role in the 2017 car bombing that killed Daphne Caruana Galizia, stated that George and Alfred Degiorgio eventually found out he was working with police. He said they learned this through Melvin Theuma, who allegedly kept in regular touch with the pair during their imprisonment.
Muscat told the courtroom that he had begun sharing information with investigators after being detained, with the aim of receiving clemency from the president. He said the Degiorgio siblings later confronted him, accusing him of betrayal.
Under questioning from the prosecution, Muscat recalled how the group had managed to bring a handset into the correctional facility. This device allowed them to speak with Theuma, whom Muscat had earlier named to detectives as the person handling financial transfers to the hit squad.
Fenech, who stands accused of ordering the killing, has pleaded not guilty.
