Residents alerted the Sint Maarten Police Force to a burst of gunfire in Simpson Bay late on Friday, 17 July, near a landmark that draws heavy crowds, 721news.com reports.

Call-takers at the dispatch desk began logging complaints at about 11:40 p.m. Investigators believe a lone assailant loosed several rounds, which hit two unoccupied cars. Why the attack occurred is not yet known.

Afterwards, the culprit sped off on a motor-scooter that had been left in the area. A sweep of the surrounding streets failed to turn up the fugitive.

Detectives and forensic officers have now begun an exhaustive review of the case in an effort to piece together the sequence of events and pinpoint who is to blame.

Thankfully, no bystanders were hit or harmed. The constabulary is urging anyone with knowledge of the episode—especially video captured nearby around the time of the blasts—to get in touch. The main station can be reached at +1 (721) 542-2222, or tipsters may call the anonymous hotline on 9300.

Police commanders expressed gratitude for the steady support shown by local residents.
