Investigators are pointing toward gang friction within the Haitian population as the likely backdrop.
The violence erupted at roughly 2:57 a.m. on Sunday inside the Island Hookah Lounge, a busy nightspot on Providenciales, according to local outlet The Sun as covered by BNO News. Officers rushed to the scene after emergency calls reported shots being fired and found numerous victims inside and around the venue.
Paramedics declared three people dead on site. Ten more were ferried to a local medical facility with injuries spanning from slight to grave.
Police Commissioner Fitz Bailey told reporters that security cameras captured images of no fewer than four assailants wielding high-caliber guns. While the precise reason for the raid is still being probed, Bailey said the working theory ties it to turf wars among gangs, notably those operating inside Haitian enclaves.
Bailey characterized the onslaught as random brutality designed to terrorize the public. He pledged that patrols would be stepped up across the archipelago in the coming days.
Premier Charles Washington Misick echoed the gangland theme, remarking that a large share of the territory’s violent feuds appears concentrated among Haitian communities.
Acting Governor Anya Williams formally labeled the occurrence a critical national-security incident. She disclosed that London and the National Crime Agency had been alerted, and that the island’s hospital was temporarily locked down as a safeguard.
The Turks and Caicos, a British Overseas Territory lying southeast of the Bahamas and just north of Haiti, has not previously recorded a mass shooting of this magnitude, officials noted.
